How can I help make sure my child doesn’t gain access to an unsecured gun?

It is always an adult’s responsibility to make sure children are never in the presence of unsecured guns. Kids will be kids, so don’t assume a child will not find and touch an unsecured gun, even if they have been told not to.

Follow the Be SMART framework to help keep your child safe:

1. Secure all guns in your homes and vehicles by keeping them unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition.
2. Model responsible behavior around guns.
3. Ask about unsecured guns in other homes.
4. Recognize the role of guns in suicide.
5. Tell your peers to Be SMART.
