DENVER — Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, declared a major victory today as Colorado voters rejected gun lobby-backed Joe O’Dea and re-elected Michael Bennet to the U.S. Senate.
“The people of Colorado know the devastation of gun violence all too well — and they also know Senator Bennet will do everything in his power to keep them safe,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Everytown was incredibly proud to support his campaign, and we are eager to partner with him again to make more progress in Washington.”
“Senator Bennet has shown time and again he is willing to do what it takes to address America’s gun violence epidemic, and our volunteers campaigned tirelessly to help re-elect him,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “Senator Bennet has said our children don’t deserve to live with the fear of being shot and killed as they go about their daily lives. With Senator Bennet in Congress, we can continue to take action so they don’t have to.”
“Colorado voters know that Senator Bennet works day-in and day-out to keep our families and communities safe,” said Coni Sanders, a volunteer with the Colorado chapter of Moms Demand Action whose father, Dave Sanders, was the teacher and girls’ basketball coach killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. “We are grateful to be sending Senator Bennet back to Congress, as he is exactly what both Colorado and the country need right now.”
Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund supported Senator Bennet as part of Everytown’s $2.7 million investment in Colorado. Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers made over six million voter contacts through phone calls, text messages, door knocks, and more across this country this election cycle to support gun sense candidates up and down the ballot. Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts also canvassed alongside gun sense candidates in Colorado, including Senator Bennet.
As part of its efforts this election cycle, Everytown also released polling this fall showing that the vast majority of voters in Colorado support common-sense gun safety laws, including 92% support for background checks on all gun sales. More information is available here.
