At a Glance

Rhode Island

Recent legislative victories in Rhode Island include a full suite of domestic violence laws and a prohibition on ghost guns and high-capacity magazines. The Ocean State ranks number 13 nationally in gun law strength, but experiences one of the lowest gun death rates. While the state’s good laws undoubtedly protect its citizens, its relatively low rate of violence may be attributed in part to the very limited prevalence of guns in the state—Rhode Island has one of the lowest rates of gun ownership in the country. The state may also be buffered by the strong laws of other states in the region.
