​​North Carolina has a mixed record on gun laws and has a gun death rate above the national average. In 2023, North Carolina repealed its permit to purchase handguns—a fundamental requirement the state had in place for over a century. Lawmakers have also made efforts to repeal several remaining gun safety protections. The state does, however, have strong domestic violence laws for abusers under restraining orders.
