Maine
Maine historically had very few gun safety laws, but in the wake of the Lewiston mass shooting in 2023, the state made significant progress and established a background check requirement that covers many unlicensed gun sales. The vast majority of gun deaths in the state are suicides, but the state has only some policies focused on firearm suicide prevention, such as a waiting period. Maine is also a permitless carry state, though it continues to have low gun violence relative to its firearm laws, likely in part because it is protected by the strong laws of other states in the region.
