Though Maine has taken some steps to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them, state leaders must do more to prevent gun violence. Maine law doesn’t require background checks on all gun sales, making it easy for prohibited purchasers to access guns, no questions asked.
The state does not have an Extreme Risk law, also known as a “red flag” law, to empower families and law enforcement to prevent tragedies before they happen. And in 2015, the state repealed one of the few gun safety laws it had, allowing people to carry hidden, loaded guns throughout the state without a permit. To become a safer state, Maine should require background checks and enact an Extreme Risk law, also known as a red flag law, to empower families and law enforcement to prevent firearm suicides.
