Louisiana
Louisiana has weak gun laws and has the second-highest rate of gun deaths in the United States. State law does not require a person to obtain a criminal background check before purchasing a firearm from an unlicensed seller. Louisiana also has a Stand Your Ground law that allows people to shoot and kill others, even if they could have safely and easily retreated from a confrontation.
Louisiana does require a person to obtain a permit and take firearm safety training before carrying a concealed handgun in public. Louisiana also has relatively strong domestic violence laws. These laws prohibit family members from possessing firearms if they have been convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence or are subject to domestic violence restraining orders. They also require them to relinquish the firearms they already own. Louisiana could improve its domestic violence laws by broadening them to apply to domestic violence committed against dating partners.
To become a safer state, Lousiana can enact extreme risk protection order legislation, ensure background checks are required for all firearm sales, and improve its domestic violence laws by broadening them to apply to domestic violence committed against dating partners.
