WASHINGTON – On Friday, students, educators, parents and community advocates will join together for a National Day of Action Against Gun Violence in Schools. Volunteers with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and Students Demand Action, both a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, and all supporting partners of the day of action, will take part in local events across the nation. The events take place on the 19-year mark of the Columbine shooting, which took the lives of 13 students and educators, and wounded more than 20.
STATEMENT FROM MARCO VARGAS, A STUDENTS DEMAND ACTION LEADER IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA:
“School used to be the place where I felt safest. After Parkland and so many other school tragedies, it’s clear that nowhere is safe until we finally fix our gun laws. Like so many other students, I’m committed to registering my peers to vote and making sure that lawmakers hear us in November. Prioritizing gun lobby profits over our lives is unacceptable.”
STATEMENT FROM COREY THORNBLAD, A VOLUNTEER WITH MOMS DEMAND ACTION AND A TEACHER IN FAIRFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA:
“This generation of students has grown up with the knowledge that at any moment, a gunman could burst into their classroom, their movie theater or even into their homes. It is on us to protect the next generation from further trauma and demand common sense solutions that can save lives. I’m proud to stand with so many students and community members – all of whom are united in saying that we’ve had enough of gun violence in our schools, communities and beyond.”
