At Least One Person Was Fatally Shot and Killed at a Restaurant on King Street; More Information About Gun Violence in the US is Available Here

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, responded to reports of a shooting today in downtown Charleston. While details are still unfolding, reports indicate that a man with a firearm took hostages at a local restaurant and fatally shot at least one person before being shot by responding police officers.

STATEMENT FROM JACKIE SHELLEY, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE SOUTH CAROLINA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“My thoughts are with those affected by this terrifying shooting. No one should have to worry that their lunch out could turn deadly when someone burst in wielding a firearm. Charleston knows all too well the pain that gun violence inflicts on a community – I can only imagine what went through the heads of those in the restaurant.

“I am once again reminded that we can and must do more to save lives from gun violence. Gun violence is a uniquely American problem that touches every single community in our country. We all need to be part of the solution because we have the right to be safe from gun violence. Now is the time to demand that our politicians stand up against dangerous policy proposals here in South Carolina and do more to protect our communities from senseless gun violence.”
