COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today criticized the House Judiciary Committee vote advancing H.B. 3930, legislation that would dismantle South Carolina’s concealed handgun permitting system, allowing people to carry loaded handguns in public without a permit or firearm safety training. The bill would also force South Carolina law enforcement to automatically recognize concealed carry permits from any other state, including those with no training requirement or other weak permitting standards.
STATEMENT FROM SYLVIE DESSAU, VOLUNTEER WITH THE SOUTH CAROLINA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“I am deeply troubled by the House Judiciary Committee’s vote in favor of legislation that would annihilate a permitting system that has helped to keep South Carolinians safe for years. This bill passed out of subcommittee without any opportunity for public comment, which is unacceptable. If passed into law, H.B. 3930 would drastically lower the bar for who can carry a handgun in our communities. This unnecessary bill leaves many of us less safe. I urge our lawmakers to do the right thing and vote against this dangerous proposal.”
