SALEM, Ore. – The Oregon chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded House passage of Senate Bill 719, an Extreme Risk Protection Order bill that would allow courts to temporarily prohibit a person from having a gun if law enforcement or immediate family members show that he or she poses a danger to self or others.
Previous Everytown research found that, in nearly half of mass shootings in the United States from 2009-2016, the shooter exhibited “red flag” warning signs prior to the shooting indicating that they posed a danger to themselves or others.
STATEMENT FROM LISA REYNOLDS, VOLUNTEER WITH THE OREGON CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION:
“I applaud the House for passing Senate Bill 719, Oregon’s Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation. Research shows that before 42 percent of mass shootings, there are ‘red flags’ of imminent danger, and this common-sense bill will empower families and law enforcement officers to take action to potentially prevent tragedies before they happen. That’s why we urge Governor Brown to sign SB 719 into law. While today is a big step forward for gun violence prevention, there is still a lot of work to do to reduce the number of gun deaths in Oregon. We look forward to continuing that work in 2018 and beyond.”
