NEW POLLING: Majority of Black Voters in Battleground States Support Kamala Harris, Gun Safety Policies

9.12.2024

WASHINGTON — Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund, Rolling Sea Action Fund, and Global Strategy Group released a new polling memo showing that Black voters in battleground states are highly motivated to vote for Vice President Harris and consider gun safety to be a key priority in the upcoming elections.

The polling showed that Harris has a commanding lead over Trump among Black voters, with the ability to consolidate even more support, and that MAGA Republicans are deeply unpopular among this audience. An overwhelming majority of Black voters — over 90% — support common-sense gun violence prevention policies.

“The poll shows that an overwhelming majority of Black voters in key states firmly back Vice President Harris and want leaders who will push for stronger gun safety laws,” said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. “It’s clear that these voters are eager to reject Donald Trump and his guns everywhere agenda, which harms Black communities disproportionately. The data proves that gun safety is a major political issue—it energizes voters, changes minds, and has become a litmus test for candidates in key states.”

“It’s clear that Black voters are ready to send a message to Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans that they have no business running our country,” said Niccara Campbell Wallace, Executive Director of Rolling Sea Action Fund. “But the results also show that we have a lot of work to do in the final stretch and cannot be complacent. We must continue to organize and mobilize to ensure that Vice President Harris wins, and so that we can continue the progress on keeping our communities safe from gun violence, driving down the cost of living, all while protecting a woman’s right to the health care she deserves.”

Key Highlights:

  • Vice President Harris is well-liked (81% favorable), and a strong majority of Black voters approve of the work she’s done as Vice President (79% positive).
  • Republicans are severely underwater among these Black voters: MAGA Republicans are deeply unpopular among this audience (6% favorable/77% unfavorable), as are Trump (10% favorable/84% unfavorable) and JD Vance (10% favorable/63% unfavorable).
  • Key issues for Black voters include inflation, the high cost of living, abortion access, and gun violence prevention.
  • An overwhelming majority of Black battleground voters — over 90% — support common-sense gun violence prevention policies such as background checks on all gun sales, requiring gun owners to store their firearms securely, and increasing funding for community violence intervention programs.
  • Top reasons to vote against MAGA Republicans include their desire to repeal the ACA, getting common-sense gun safety policies passed, and MAGA Republicans’ efforts to pass a national abortion ban.

In July, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Victory Fund announced a $45 million electoral program and the launch of a new grassroots voter contact program to help elect gun sense candidates and defeat gun extremists up and down the ballot in key swing districts and states. Everytown’s efforts will focus on young voters on college campuses, voters of color, and suburban women in Arizona, California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
