New Mexico Moms Demand Action Applauds House Committee for Advancing Legislation to Require Background Checks on All Gun Sales

SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded the House Judiciary Committee for advancing SB 8, legislation that would require background checks on all gun sales in the state. Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee also advanced a companion bill, SB 8.

Federal law requires licensed gun dealers to conduct criminal background checks on gun sales, but a loophole exists that allows unlicensed sales, including sales online and at gun shows, to take place without background checks. Twenty states have passed laws to close this loophole for the sale of handguns, but New Mexico has yet to take action.

“With today’s vote, we’re one step closer to a safer New Mexico,” said Emilie De Angelis, volunteer chapter leader with New Mexico Moms Demand Action. “I’m proud to see my legislators continue to prioritize this common-sense legislation.”
