8.1.2023

TRENTON, N.J. —  The New Jersey chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots network, released the following statement in response to the passing of New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver.

“Our movement has lost a champion,” said Shani Nuckols, chapter leader of the New Jersey chapter of Moms Demand Action. “Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver was an advocate for New Jersey families and a steadfast leader in the fight against gun violence. Her passing is a great loss for the Garden State. Her long-standing legacy of public service will undoubtedly inspire generations to come. Our thoughts are with her loved ones during this difficult time.”

Sheila Oliver served as Lieutenant Governor since January 2018 and was the first woman of color to hold statewide elected office in state history. She also was the first Black woman to serve as New Jersey Speaker of the General Assembly. In 2021, Lt. Governor Oliver, alongside New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, was awarded the “Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction” for her leadership in protecting New Jersey families from gun violence.
