Nebraska Moms Demand Action Volunteers, Everytown Criticize Committee Vote on Dangerous Gun Bill That Puts Nebraska Communities at Risk

LINCOLN, Neb. — Volunteers with the Nebraska chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the statement below after the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee voted to advance LB 68, a bill that would revoke the ability of Nebraska cities and villages to enforce common-sense public safety measures designed to keep communities safe.

Yesterday, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and the Nebraska chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, released a new poll conducted by SurveyUSA finding that 62 percent of Nebraskans – including the majority of gun owners and poll respondents from both major parties – oppose this legislation. The bill would also allow out-of-state groups like the NRA to sue Nebraska cities and communities over life-saving local firearms ordinances, and collect legal fees from Nebraska taxpayers. “I’m disappointed in our representatives in the Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee who voted to put the gun lobby’s interests before the safety of their communities. This legislation would make it harder for Nebraska mayors and law enforcement to keep their communities safe, while making it easier for the gun lobby to push a dangerous agenda and line its pockets at the same time. The gun lobby should not have the power to intimidate our mayors and police chiefs. I hope our representatives will listen to the Nebraskans who have voiced their concerns about this dangerous and costly legislation and prevent it from becoming law.”
