Andrews Becomes First Moms Demand Action Volunteer Elected to U.S. Senate

Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund Invested $500k in Support of Andrews’ Campaign

WASHINGTON — Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, declared a major victory today as voters elected former Moms Demand Action volunteer Dr. Annie Andrews to the U.S. Senate. Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund invested $500k in support of Senator-elect Andrews, who is the first Moms Demand Action volunteer elected to the U.S. Senate.

“Dr. Annie Andrews is a pediatrician, a mom, and a former Moms Demand Action volunteer who has spent her entire career fighting to keep kids safe, and now she’ll take that fight to the U.S. Senate,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Winning a state Donald Trump carried by nearly 18 points is a wake-up call to every candidate who thinks gun safety only plays well in blue states, and Everytown is proud to have been with her from the start.”

“Annie Andrews joined the South Carolina chapter of Moms Demand Action in 2018, went through our Demand a Seat candidate training program, and is now headed to the United States Senate,” said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. “South Carolina volunteers organized alongside her for years before she ever ran, and this fall they knocked doors across the state to get her there. There is no clearer sign of how far this movement has come.”

“Dr. Andrews has stood with our volunteers for years, and we’re so proud to see her win,” said Robin Hartle, a volunteer with the South Carolina chapter of Moms Demand Action. “We talked to neighbors from the Upstate to the Lowcountry about how much this race meant for our families. Now we have a senator who will treat gun violence like the crisis it is, and we can’t wait to get to work.”

Andrews, a pediatrician, joined the South Carolina chapter of Moms Demand Action in 2018 after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. She later went through Demand a Seat, Everytown’s program for volunteers and gun violence survivors running for office. Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund endorsed Andrews in August, and Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund invested $500k in support of her campaign. Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers made more than 15 million voter contacts across the nation, up and down the ballot.
