The Oregon chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statements after the Oregon House passed SB 554 B, legislation that would allow the state capitol, airports, schools and universities to prohibit firearms in their buildings and require firearms be securely stored when not in use. The bill needs to be concurred in the Senate and then will move to Governor Kate Brown’s desk.
“Our state has continued to see the devastation of gun violence,” said Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee, an Everytown Survivor Fellow and volunteer for the Oregon chapter of Moms Demand Action. “We are grateful to the House for prioritizing this common-sense, life-saving legislation and we look forward to celebrating after it is swiftly signed by gun sense champion, Governor Brown.”
Research shows that this legislation can prevent gun violence. Firearms are the second leading cause of death among children and teens in Oregon. Every year, over 500 people die by guns in Oregon.
