11.12.2019

Volunteers Elected Last Week Join Dozens of Moms Demand Action Volunteers Who Have Won Races Since its Founding in 2012

NEW YORK — Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, released the following statement congratulating the Moms Demand Action volunteer leaders — 10 in total — who won their electoral bids this cycle.

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“For nearly seven years, Moms Demand Action volunteers have shown they’ll do whatever it takes to keep their communities safe. That includes taking their advocacy to the next level by running for elected office. I couldn’t be more proud of these newly-elected leaders, and I know as lawmakers, they’ll be the ultimate gun sense champions.”
The following Moms Demand Action volunteer leaders were endorsed by Everytown and won their races:

  • Rachel Friend, Colorado, Boulder City Council
  • Bridget Montgomery, Iowa, Urbandale City Council
  • Sabrina Shields-Cook, Iowa, Ames School Board Director At Large
  • Kathy Parker, Indiana, West Lafayette City Council, District 5
  • Ali Brown, Indiana, Indianapolis City-Council, District 5
  • Karla Psaros, Massachusetts, Braintree School Committee
  • Graelyn McKeown, New Jersey, West Windsor-Plainsboro Board of Education
  • Sarah Stankorb Taylor, Ohio, Wyoming City Council
  • Laura Jane Cohen, Virginia, Fairfax County School Board, Springfield District
  • Laura Johnson, Washington, Edmonds City Council, Position 7

In 2018, 16 Moms Demand Action volunteer leaders and survivors won their races for public office, and earlier in 2019, two volunteers were elected to public office. Movita Johnson-Harell, a Philadelphia-based gun violence survivor, was endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, and won a special election for Pennsylvania House of Representatives District 190. Moms Demand Action volunteer Christine McGrath was also endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund earlier this year, and she won her race for Verona Town Council in New Jersey

Moms Demand Action volunteers know that gun violence kills 100 Americans every day and wounds hundreds more – and they are running for office to enact change and stand up to the gun lobby’s priorities.
