Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety Announce Participation in the Women’s March on Washington’s “Day Without a Woman”

3.7.2017

Day Without a Woman” is a One-Day Demonstration of Economic Solidarity in Support of Equity, Justice and Human Rights of Women and All Gender-Oppressed People

WASHINGTON – Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, announced today the organization will participate in the Women’s March on Washington’s “Day Without a Woman,” a one-day demonstration of economic solidarity in support of equity, justice and human rights of women and all gender-oppressed people happening tomorrow on International Women’s Day, March 8.

As an official partner of the Women’s March on Washington on January 21, 2017, thousands of volunteers with Moms Demand Action, members of the Everytown Survivor Network and members of the Everytown Creative Council marched at the Women’s March on Washington and more than 30 sister events around the country alongside gun violence survivors, cultural leaders, teachers, faith leaders and Americans from all walks of life who believe we can do more to protect our families and communities from gun violence.

Moms Demand Action released the following statements in support of the “Day Without A Woman” from Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action and Lucy McBath, Faith and Outreach Leader for Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action and mother of slain teen Jordan Davis, who was shot and killed at a Florida gas station during an argument over loud music.

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Our volunteers – women and mothers, gun violence survivors, and everyday Americans – spend countless hours making our country safer while paid legislators too often ignore the gun violence crisis that kills more than 90 Americans and injures hundreds more every day. Gun violence is a women’s issue, too; American women are 16 times more likely to be shot and killed than women in peer nations. That is why tomorrow, on International Women’s Day, Moms Demand Action will support our volunteers who choose to participate in the Women’s March on Washington’s ‘Day Without a Woman.’ From wearing our red Moms Demand Action t-shirts, to leveraging our economic power, to sharing the stories of our fearless volunteers and survivors – we stand with the Women’s March and everyone working to make equality, justice and human rights of all women a national conversation.”

STATEMENT FROM LUCY MCBATH, FAITH AND OUTREACH LEADER FOR EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY AND MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“When we stood with millions in January in our nation’s capital for the Women’s March on Washington and hundreds of sister marches nation and worldwide, the power of our collective voices was palpable. And we have learned from the movements that came before us that this work is never over. That is why we will come together again tomorrow for the ‘Day Without A Woman.’ As gun violence prevention activists and as women, we do not and cannot lead single-issue lives. We know that by using our voices, votes and wallets, we can push back against the misogyny, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, transphobia, anti-immigrant rhetoric and religious intolerance that shape many of our realities today. And that is why tomorrow – and everyday – we will continue to challenge ourselves to fight for what is right and protect those who cannot protect themselves, together.”
