Today, the co-chairs of Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), a nonpartisan coalition of more than 2,000 current and former mayors that is a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following joint statement in response to the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Championship parade in Kansas City, standing in solidarity with fellow MAIG co-chair Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas.
“Yet again, another community is grappling with the devastation of senseless and preventable gun violence. Our cities should be safe places to go to school, to ride the bus, to bring our kids to a parade to celebrate a historic win without the fear of gunfire ringing out. But in America, once again, that dream has been shattered.
“The pain and trauma of our fellow Mayors Against Illegal Guns co-chair Mayor Lucas and his entire community is an all too familiar feeling. But that pain and trauma is followed with an unyielding resolve to ensure a celebratory day isn’t met with gunfire. As Mayors, we are on the frontlines of our nation’s gun violence epidemic and, as Mayors, we understand what it will take to address this crisis: Comprehensive, common sense gun safety laws. Our hearts are with the Kansas City community, but Kansas City needs more than thoughts and prayers. We will continue to demand action to prevent tragedies like this from happening again, and we will do everything in our power to keep our cities safe.”
The current co-chairs of Mayors Against Illegal Guns are Baltimore, Maryland Mayor Brandon Scott; Chattanooga, Tennessee Mayor Tim Kelly; Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas; Mount Vernon, New York Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard; New York, New York Mayor Eric Adams; Former Stockton, California Mayor Michael Tubbs; St. Louis, Missouri Mayor Tishaura O. Jones; Tampa, Florida Mayor Jane Castor; and Tucson, Arizona Mayor Regina Romero.
