The Far-right Gun Group, Gun Owners of America, is Known For Promoting A Dangerous Conspiracy Theory About the 2012 Mass Shooting in Aurora And Supporting White Supremacist Organizations
According to the Colorado Times Recorder, Lauren Boebert, the Republican congressional candidate for Colorado’s 3rd district, is accepting the endorsement of extreme, far-right gun group, Gun Owners of America (GOA), at an event this Saturday. GOA is known to support white supremacist organizations and their former president, Larry Pratt, has a history of espousing extremist, white supremacist ideology. Most recently, GOA sent fundraising emails asking for money to defend the 17-year-old armed counterprotester who shot and killed two protesters in Kenosha. And in 2012, GOA promoted the theory that the mass shooting at an Aurora theater – which killed 12 people and wounded 70 – was “a false flag attack orchestrated by the federal government.”
“Gun Owners of America has sowed division, incited violence, and disrespected gun violence survivors in Colorado time and again,” said Carolyn Landes, a volunteer with the Colorado chapter of Moms Demand Action and resident of Colorado’s 3rd Congressional district. “We knew Lauren Boebert was extreme, but by accepting this endorsement, she is condoning GOA’s defense of the Kenosha shooter and dangerous lies about one of Colorado’s most tragic events.”
Last weekend, U.S Senator Cory Gardner was seen campaigning with Boebert, despite reports that Boebert may have violated federal and Colorado laws by allowing an under-age server at her restaurant to carry a handgun and that Boebert has a history of minor arrests and skipping court dates. According to the Colorado Times Recorder, GOA’s December 2014 newsletter featured a photo of Gardner.
The majority of voters in Colorado support stronger gun laws but Boebert opposes common-sense gun measures. Her opponent, Diane Mitsch Bush, on the other hand, is a gun sense candidate who has pledged to act on gun violence and fight for common-sense gun safety legislation in Congress.
