    Kansas Moms Demand Action, Everytown Respond to Fatal Shooting of Transgender Woman in Kansas City

      Ja’leyah-Jamar is at Least the 19th Trans Person Killed Nationwide This Year; 15 Have Been Killed With a Gun, Almost All Were Black Women

      KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to the death of a transgender woman in Kansas City, Kansas last Friday. According to reports, Ja’leyah-Jamar, who was initially misgendered, was found with gunshot wounds in the middle of a road. She was immediately taken to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

      “We’re heartbroken and angry that another life has been cut short by gun violence in our city,” said Amanda Winch, a volunteer with the Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Our thoughts are with Ja’leyah-Jamar’s family, friends and the transgender community as they grieve. We refuse to accept these shootings as normal.”

      Ja’leyah-Jamar is the second Black trans women to be shot and killed in Kansas City this year after Brooklyn Lindsey was shot and killed on the porch of an abandoned home across the state line in Kansas City, Missouri this past June.
