Houston Residential Shooting Leaves Three Dead, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action Respond
4.30.2024
HOUSTON, TX – The Texas chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots network, released the following statement in response to a shooting Monday night outside a house in a residential neighborhood in Houston. According to reports, police suspect this could be a double murder-suicide after two people were found dead in the backyard and the third was found shot to death in the garage apartment with a gun lying next to them.
“This is the devastating reality our lawmakers have created for Texans: one where we cannot be safe in our own homes leading to an endless cycle of violence,” said Liz Hanks, aMoms Demand Action leader for the Texas chapter. “This only emphasizes the need to keep fighting for gun safety – we will not rest until lawmakers protect constituents across the state.”
Last legislative session, in the wake of tragedy at a mass shooting at a mall in Allen, Texas lawmakers, beholden to the gun lobby, instead passed a bill to allow more guns in schools. Texas lawmakers should instead work to pass common sense gun reform legislation to make the state safer and reduce gun violence.
In an average year, 3,996 people die by guns in Texas, and 5,556 more are wounded. Guns are the leading cause of death among children and teens in Texas. More information on gun violence in Texas is available here.
