Everytown Statement on Filing of Three Gun Safety Discharge Petitions

Discharge Petitions Filed by Reps Clyburn, McBath, and Thompson Seek to Close the Charleston Loophole, Ban Assault Weapons, and Expand Background Checks

WASHINGTON — Everytown for Gun Safety and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, released the following statements today applauding the filing of three discharge petitions to advance gun safety legislation in the U.S. House. The discharge petitions, filed by Representatives Jim Clyburn, Lucy McBath, and Mike Thompson, seek to close the Charleston loophole, ban assault weapons, and expand background checks.

“We’re thankful to Representatives McBath, Clyburn, and Thompson for heeding the calls of the vast majority of Americans who want continued action on gun safety from Congress,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “These common-sense proposals will reduce gun violence and ensure weapons of war do not end up in the wrong hands. This effort to protect American lives stands in stark contrast with what we’re seeing from gun extremists in the House, who today are pushing legislation to make it easier for the next shooter to obtain firearms like the one used in the Nashville shooting.”
