Everytown, Moms Demand Action Statements on Life Saving Gun Safety Investments Included in President Biden’s Build Back Better Framework

10.28.2021

Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action, and Students Demand Action commended the inclusion of a historic investment in a new and innovative community violence intervention initiative in the Build Back Better framework announced this morning.  The inclusion of the community safety initiative in a signature piece of legislation demonstrates the ongoing commitment from the Biden-Harris administration to place evidence-informed, effective gun safety front and center in the agenda and focus on communities of color that are most impacted by gun violence. Everytown is calling for Congress to include  the full $5 billion in funding for these local initiatives to save lives and combat gun violence all over the country.

In response to the framework’s announcement, Everytown for Gun Safety president John Feinblatt and Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts issued the following statements:

“President Biden ran on the strongest gun safety platform in history, and he’s making good on it by investing in community violence intervention initiatives,” said Feinblatt. “This landmark investment would provide groups on the frontlines of America’s gun violence crisis with much-needed support as they work to keep their communities safe. Now Congress needs to do its part and deliver $5 billion in desperately needed funding to communities across the country by passing the Build Back Better Act.”

“By prioritizing life saving investments in community violence initiatives, the Biden-Harris administration continues to govern as the strongest on gun safety in a generation,” said Watts. “We’re thrilled to see these historic investments in the communities most impacted by gun violence included in the Build Back Better framework agreement and our grassroots volunteers across the country will do everything in our power to get this across the finish line.”

Everytown has been calling for investment in community violence intervention to combat the rising tide of gun violence in America along with champions in Congress like Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Reps. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Steven Horsford (D-NV), Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Robin Kelly (D-IL), and Lucy McBath (D-GA).

Everytown is proud to be a member of the Invest In Us Coalition, which helped make this progress possible. The coalition is comprised of community and national violence prevention organizations committed to building support to fund evidence-based community solutions to gun violence and educate leaders and the general public about proactive solutions to make our communities safer.
