Today, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action issued the following statements after Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-FL) announced that she would not be seeking re-election in 2022.
“Rep. Murphy has been a forceful advocate for gun violence prevention and a successful leader in funding critical CDC research to help save lives,,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “We appreciate all she has done for the gun safety movement and know that whatever she chooses to pursue next, she will excel in.”
“Rep. Murphy has been a champion in Congress and a passionate advocate for survivors in her community,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “While we will undoubtedly miss her leadership in Washington, we are grateful for her dedicated service and wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
Rep. Murphy, a member of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, was instrumental in securing historic investments in gun violence research from the CDC. As author of the Gun Violence Research Act, Rep. Murphy successfully led the effort to lift the effective ban on federally-sponsored gun violence research and later secured $25 million for the CDC and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to sponsor independent research into ways to reduce gun violence. This Congress, she led the effort to establish the National Pulse Memorial five years after the shooting at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub left 49 people dead and 53 wounded and voted to pass historic gun safety legislation in the House, including universal background checks and closing the Charleston loophole.
