Everytown for Gun Safety Responds to Wayne Lapierre at CPAC

WASHINGTON – Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement in response to National Rifle Association Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre’s speech today at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“The NRA’s leader took to the main stage at CPAC today and once again, he spewed fear-mongering rhetoric with the ultimate goal of pushing his guns everywhere agenda. Here is the truth that the vast majority of Americans including gun owners and NRA members agree on: the Second Amendment goes hand-in-hand with common-sense public safety measures that will protect our families from gun violence. We saw that just yesterday when Montana Governor Steve Bullock vetoed NRA-backed permitless carry legislation and when the Wyoming legislature shut down the gun lobby’s attempts to force guns on campus. And the nation’s courts agree – just this week they delivered two significant defeats to the gun lobby’s attempts to gut federal and local gun laws including trying to gag Florida doctors from talking to their patients about gun safety.
“The gun lobby poured $30 million into electing President Trump and we know they’ll be fighting for a return on their investment – the President even noted today in his speech to CPAC that the NRA has been ‘a great supporter.’ Whether it’s the NRA’s attempts to lift regulations on silencers or make it legal for dangerous people to carry hidden, loaded weapons everywhere, these misguided efforts will be met head on. Our growing movement of Americans will stand and fight against the extremist NRA agenda in Washington, in statehouses – even at the NRA Convention in April.”
