Everytown for Gun Safety Releases 2026 State Gun Law Rankings, Alabama’s Ranking Increases by Six Following the Passage of Gun Safety Legislation, Including a Ban on Glock Switches

1.15.2026

MONTGOMERY, AL — Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund launched the updated “Gun Law Rankings” for 2026, an online tool and website that ranks all 50 states based on the strength of their gun laws and catalogs gun safety laws state by state. This year, Everytown’s state gun law rankings also show whether states’ rankings increased or decreased over the past year, reflecting action to pass common-sense gun safety policies or gun-lobby-backed dangerous measures, like permitless carry. Everytown’s analysis found that Alabama ranks 28th in the nation for its gun laws, rising 6 spots since last year.

Alabama’s six-point rise in the national rankings is a direct result of the 2025 legislative session, where lawmakers took decisive action to close dangerous gaps in state law. The state saw its ranking climb from 34th to 28th after enacting a suite of public safety measures, including a ban on auto sears (Glock switches) and the expansion of firearm prohibitors for individuals convicted of felonies. Additionally, Alabama strengthened protections for families by prohibiting gun possession by dating partners convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors or subject to active domestic violence restraining orders. These common-sense reforms represent the most significant improvement to Alabama’s gun safety framework in recent years.

“For too long, Alabama has trailed the rest of the country in gun safety, but this six-point jump in the rankings proves that we are finally heading in the right direction,” said Dr. Paula Wilson, chapter leader with the Alabama chapter of Moms Demand Action. “By closing loopholes for domestic abusers and banning dangerous Glock switches, our lawmakers have shown that protecting our families is a priority that transcends politics. This is a huge win for every Alabamian who has marched, called, and testified for a safer state.”

“We shouldn’t have to worry about machine guns flooding our streets or schools,” said Amaya Waymon, a volunteer with the Tuskegee University chapter of Students Demand Action “Banning Glock switches is a common-sense step that will save lives, and seeing Alabama climb six spots in the national rankings shows that progress is possible, even in the heart of the South. My generation is paying attention, and we’re not done pushing for safer communities”
