PHOENIX — The Arizona chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots network, issued the following statement in response to the Senate advancing SB 1198 and SB 1189. These reckless measures seek to force Arizona universities, colleges and community colleges to let anyone with a concealed carry permit carry a concealed gun on campus – including in classrooms, dorms, and at sporting events, and disallowing local governments from prohibiting gun shows from occurring in their cities or counties, respectively.
“Gun violence has destroyed any sense of safety in our communities – instead of working to restore it by passing common-sense gun safety measures, our lawmakers continue pushing gun lobby priorities that will only add fuel to this crisis,” said Lisa Kopp, a volunteer with the Arizona chapter of Moms Demand Action. “If lawmakers are worried about gun violence they should join us and our Governor in working on behalf of Arizona families on common-sense gun safety measures that prevent tragedies before they strike.”
“Students from around the country come to Arizona to find a world-class education – yet lawmakers are threatening our safety by continuing to pass reckless legislation to put guns on our campuses,” said Avi Rubin, a volunteer leader with the Arizona State University chapter of Students Demand Action. “We urge lawmakers in the House to shut down these absurd proposals and pass common-sense measures that give us the tools to thrive, not to be gunned down. Comprehensive action on gun safety is long overdue.”
Last year, Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed six dangerous gun-related bills aimed at adding more guns in more places – including a measure similar to SB 1198. In an average year, 1,228 people die by guns in Arizona. Gun violence costs Arizona $15.9 billion each year, of which $253.2 million is paid by taxpayers.
