Deadly Shooting in Cloquet Highlights Need for Continued Action on Gun Violence Prevention in Minnesota

CLOQUET, Minn. — The Minnesota chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety’s grassroots networks, issued the following statements in response to a shooting in Cloquet where two people were shot and killed. According to reports, police were called to a Super 8 Hotel on Monday night, after a hotel worker called 911 reporting a fellow hotel worker “looked like she’d been attacked.”

“Our hearts break for the loved ones of the victims of this horrific shooting,” said Gina Miller, a volunteer with the Minnesota chapter of Moms Demand Action. “Cloquet is a tight knit community and this violence will have reverberating effects throughout the entire city. In these first few days of 2024, there have already been too many devastating shootings in Minnesota. We refuse to accept this as our reality, and will continue working to demand a gun violence free future for our children.”

In an average year, 497 people die by guns in Minnesota. Each year, gun violence costs Minnesota $6.6 billion each year, of which $105.5 million is paid by taxpayers. However, following the 2023 legislative session where Minnesota lawmakers past common sense gun laws, Minnesota saw its gun law ranking rise three ranks, now ranking 14th in gun law strength.
