Congressman Steven Horsford Named 2023 Federal Gun Sense Lawmaker of Year at Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund’s Gun Sense University

Gun Sense Lawmaker of the Year Awarded to Congressman Horsford for His Leadership on Gun Safety

NEW YORK — Today, Everytown for Gun Safety named Congressman Steven Horsford the 2023 Federal Gun Sense Lawmaker of the Year for his leadership on gun safety as part of this year’s Gun Sense University.

“The changing political calculus around gun safety in Washington has a lot to do with leaders like Congressman Horsford, who has championed measures including the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, universal background checks, Red Flag laws, and banning assault weapons,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “We thank Congressman Horsford for his bold leadership, and look forward to our continued work together to end the gun violence epidemic.”

“From day one, Congressman Horsford has joined Nevada communities in pushing for life-saving legislation,” said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. “He’s always put the safety of our families and communities first, and we’re proud to name him our Federal Gun Sense Lawmaker of the Year for his leadership in the gun violence prevention movement.”

“Nevadans have long dealt with the consequences of our country’s gun violence epidemic, and Congressman Horsford has made it clear that he will always prioritize gun safety,” said Ariana Saunders, co-chapter lead with the Nevada chapter of Moms Demand Action. “We thank him for listening to gun violence survivors and advocates, and look forward to continuing our work with him to keep Nevadans safe.”

Gun violence is a personal issue to Congressman Horsford, whose father was taken by gun violence at the age of 19. During his time in Congress, he has been a leader in fighting for gun safety. Horsford is a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and the sponsor of the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, which invests $5 billion in anti-violence programs and $1.5 billion to provide workforce training and job opportunities for opportunity youth. He has been a champion for universal background checks, Extreme Risk laws, and banning assault weapons. In his capacity as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Horsford is holding events around the country to spotlight violence and bring providers together to work on solutions.

Gun Sense Lawmaker of the Year is an annual award given at Gun Sense University (GSU) to lawmakers who are setting an example on how to lead on gun safety. Gun Sense University, hosted by Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund (“Everytown for Gun Safety”), together with its grassroots volunteer networks Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, is an annual training and membership conference, bringing together thousands of volunteers and leaders of the gun violence prevention movement from all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
