Axios: “Poll: GOP has a big young voter problem”
10.22.2020
A new poll by Axios shows that young voters in swing states overwhelmingly support Vice President Joe Biden over President Donald Trump. The poll, which was conducted by SurveyMonkey-Tableau, shows that according to the over 600,000 likely voters surveyed since June, President Trump and the Republican Party are in trouble with young voters.
Earlier this month, Students Demand Action volunteers surpassed their goal of helping over 100,000 young people register to vote ahead of the 2020 election through its student volunteer-driven virtual organizing program. And, with just 12 days until the election, student volunteers — many of whom are too young to vote — are turning their attention to encouraging young voters to get out the vote to elect gun sense champions up and down the ballot.
Axios reports:
“There are only five states in the U.S. where voters younger than 35 embrace President Trump over Joe Biden, and none are swing states, according to new 50-state SurveyMonkey-Tableau data for Axios.
…
These scattered red spots in a sea of blue vividly illustrate Trump’s peril if young people were to actually turn out this year. Put another way, Trump’s path to re-election depends heavily on younger adults staying home.
The data also serves as a warning for the Republican Party in nearly every state as it looks beyond one presidential contest.
…
In some other red states, younger voters strongly supported Biden over Trump — including two pivotal ones, Texas (59%-40%) and Georgia (60%-39%), and even deep-red South Carolina (56%-43%).
…
Biden led Trump with younger voters by ranges of between 18-28 percentage points in the battlegrounds of Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.”
Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. Gun violence has a devastating impact on American children and teenagers, with over 3,000 children and teens aged 0-19 shot and killed and 12,700 shot and injured every year.
While most media attention focuses on mass shootings, 85 percent of gun homicides for children under the age of 13 occur in the home and are often connected to domestic or family violence. Gun violence also disproportionately affects Black children and teens, who are 14 times more likely than their white peers to die by gun homicide, and 10 times more likely to be hospitalized for a firearm injury.
Students Demand Action volunteers are available for interviews to discuss what’s at stake for young voters in the upcoming election and how Students Demand Action volunteers are organizing on the ground to turn out votes for gun sense candidates up and down the ballot.
