LANSING, Mich. – More than 100 volunteers with the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and gun violence survivors from the Everytown Survivor Network, both part of Everytown for Gun Safety, met with their representatives today and urged them to oppose HB 4003 and HB 4005, dangerous bills that would dismantle Michigan’s Concealed Pistol License and training requirements. These bills would lower the bar for who may carry concealed handguns in public in Michigan and would let some violent criminals – and people with no safety training – legally carry hidden, loaded handguns in public.
“Today, Michiganders from all over the state came to Lansing to urge legislators to block these dangerous proposals, said Emily Durbin, volunteer chapter leader with the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “We urge all our elected leaders from Michigan to protect our common-sense gun laws and reject reckless, gun lobby-backed proposals like permitless carry. Michigan Moms stand with the 88 percent of Americans who believe people should obtain a permit before carrying a concealed handgun in public.”
“We came to Lansing to remind our representatives how high the stakes are when it comes to our gun laws,” said Lesley LeBrun, a volunteer with the Michigan chapter of Moms Demand Action, whose father and brother were both killed by gun violence. “We have to do more to prevent gun violence, not less, and eliminating our permit requirement would be a dangerous leap backwards.”
