Faith Leaders Call for NRA Accountability

We, the undersigned faith leaders, represent the wide and varied religious and cultural landscape in America. We worship in different ways, on different days, and believe different things about the nature of the divine. Yet in the midst of this difference, we are unified on the value of human life, the human soul. And we sign this statement to affirm the immorality of violence, especially gun violence.

While our various traditions support notions of justified violence, we condemn the culture of violence that has spread in America. We condemn allowing gun violence to become the number one cause of death for our children and teens in this country. We condemn the notion that each person may commit violence at the slightest provocation as provided for in poorly named “stand-your-ground” laws.

This is immoral and unjust. 

We condemn the gun industry—manufacturers, dealers, trade organizations and publications, and more—for making the United States the epicenter of a gun violence crisis that takes more than 120 lives every single day and wounds hundreds more. They have used fear to sell their products and have fought in Congress and state legislatures to avoid responsibility for their actions. 

We condemn legislators who do nothing to prevent gun violence and actively push dangerous legislation that will only make our communities less safe. We deplore laws excusing the decision to shoot first rather than discuss, and to shoot anyone in the wrong place even when presenting no threat.

And at the convention of the National Rifle Association, we say explicitly that this organization, founded as a sportsmen’s organization, has become an agent of the firearm industry and long ago lost its moral compass in the pursuit of money and power. It is guilty of supporting all that we condemn. It promotes fear and hate, not love. It avoids responsibility and accountability, rather than welcoming it. It has led to death, not to life.

We faith leaders urge Americans of faith and morals to reject this platform of hatred and fear, and live in love with your neighbors.
