A movement, not one campaign
Last November, Abigail Spanberger, a former Moms Demand Action volunteer, was elected governor of Virginia. She wasn’t alone on the ballot. Thirteen other Moms Demand Action volunteers won seats in the Virginia House of Delegates the same night. Together, they now make up 20% of Virginia’s House Democratic majority — meaning the people writing and voting on gun safety bills include volunteers who spent years doing this same organizing work before they ever ran for office.
Everytown invested $400,000 in key legislative battleground districts, and volunteers contacted nearly 250,000 Virginia voters over eight months to help make it happen.
The results: More than 20 bills, signed into law
This year, more than 20 gun safety bills reached the Governor’s desk, including a ban on assault weapons. Five of those bills were led by lawmakers who are former Moms Demand Action volunteers.
None of it happened in one legislative session. Every year, volunteers gather in Richmond for Advocacy Day to meet directly with lawmakers and testify at hearings — most recently, more than 200 turned out.
600+ and counting. This isn’t Virginia alone:
More than 600 Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers have won their elections for public office nationwide — in statehouses, city councils, governors’ mansions, and school boards. Since 2021, Everytown’s Demand a Seat program has trained more than 1,200 volunteers and gun violence survivors across 47 states to run for office or work on campaigns, electing 522 of them so far.

What’s ahead
We’re the largest gun violence prevention organization in America, and our work doesn’t stop when the polls close. Right now, our teams in Virginia and across the country are educating communities on safe storage, pushing for stronger extreme risk laws, and working with local leaders to reduce violence before it happens.
This November, more Gun Sense Candidates are on the ballot in races across the country — and whoever wins, volunteers in Virginia and beyond will keep showing up in statehouses, city councils, and Congress to push for gun safety laws.
