A new assault weapons ban — and an emerging leader on gun safety:

This spring in Virginia, we helped pass a new assault weapons ban, plus several other new gun safety laws.

Thanks to newly elected leaders, Virginia is the latest state to become a national leader on gun safety.

Gov. Spanberger, a former Moms Demand Action volunteer, was joined by volunteers from the Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action and other gun safety organizations during the official signing ceremony for new gun safety bills this June.

Virginia is a perfect example of what happens when we elect Gun Sense Candidates to office. Governor Abigail Spanberger — who just signed the bills into law in her first year as governor — is also a former Moms Demand Action volunteer! And after 13 Moms Demand Action volunteers were elected to the Virginia House of Delegates last November, they now comprise 20% of Virginia’s House Democratic majority.

With more gun sense champions now in office, our local Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers, along with Everytown policy experts, were able to work with lawmakers to introduce and pass several new gun safety bills.

These victories are just the latest proof point of what we can accomplish when we elect Gun Sense Candidates to office. In 2025, Everytown invested big in Virginia’s elections — outspending the NRA 55 to 1. The result? Concrete progress that will make a real-world impact on protecting Virginians from gun violence and making communities safer.

Other state advocacy:

In states across the country, we’ve worked in state legislatures to advance strong gun safety bills, like banning DIY Machine Guns and new policies to reduce gun trafficking. In Colorado, we just helped pass a new law that bans 3D-printed guns. At the same time, we’re constantly fighting to block bad bills pushed by the gun lobby.

While Everytown’s policy experts are hard at work, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers have already organized several advocacy days at state capitols this year. From Rhode Island to Ohio to Oregon, our volunteers and policy experts have been busy meeting with lawmakers and their staff in statehouses across the country.

Standing up to Trump:

Despite the Trump administration’s dangerous attacks on gun safety at the federal level, we’re not backing down. Everytown is one of the only organizations publicly tracking the Trump administration’s actions on gun safety policy.

We’ve been working to stop dangerous “Concealed Carry Mandate” legislation in Congress, a dangerous bill backed by the gun lobby and Trump’s MAGA allies. This reckless policy would severely weaken gun safety protections, even at the state level.

At the same time, we’re pushing to advance a good gun safety bill called the GOSAFE Act, a new approach to legislation that would ban assault weapons.

It’s a challenging political environment for gun safety right now, but we aren’t giving up — and when lawmakers refuse to take action, we will hold them accountable at the ballot box.

Focus on safer communities:

As a volunteer-driven movement, community is at the heart of who we are. In addition to our advocacy at all levels of government, we’re also working to make our neighborhoods safer and provide critical education and resources for community members and leaders, while lifting up the voices of gun violence survivors.
