Julianne Moore and Over 80 Cultural Influencers Join Everytown for Gun Safety to Rally Creative Community Around Ending Gun Violence

10.13.2015

NEW YORK CITY — Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention non-profit in the country with more than three million supporters, and Julianne Moore today announced the launch of the Everytown Creative Council – a new effort that will harness the power of the creative community to help amplify the gun violence prevention movement. The group will use its collective reach and cultural influence to support common-sense solutions proven to save lives from the gun violence that claims 88 American lives every day and injures hundreds more.

“As American citizens, we are shocked and saddened by the loss of life, and the daily increase of gun violence in our beautiful country,” said Julianne Moore, Academy Award-winning actress and chair of the Everytown Creative Council. “We do not believe that the 2nd Amendment and gun safety are mutually exclusive ideas, and as a creative community, we will do everything we can to support the safety of our fellow Americans, and galvanize more to join us in this movement.”

The Everytown Creative Council includes founder and chair Julianne Moore, as well as members JJ Abrams, Aziz Ansari, Judd Apatow, Christina Applegate, Kevin Bacon, Bob Balaban, Alec Baldwin, Elizabeth Banks, Ellen Barkin, Jason Bateman, Noah Baumbach, Kristen Bell, Kate Bosworth, Amy Brenneman, Jeff Bridges, Matthew Broderick, Ty Burrell, Steve Carell, Rosanne Cash, Josh Charles, Jessica Chastain, Don Cheadle, Sofia Coppola, Billy Crudup, Lee Daniels, Ellen DeGeneres, Laura Dern, Rachel Dratch, Kirsten Dunst, Michael J. The Creative Council will partner with Everytown on an ongoing basis to help recruit more people to join the gun violence prevention movement and achieve victories that will save lives. Members will contribute in a wide variety of ways, including inviting their fans to get involved, participating in Everytown events, brainstorming new approaches to grow the gun violence prevention movement and supporting efforts to pass common-sense gun safety legislation.

“Despite the same levels of mental illness and exposure to the same TV, movies, music, and culture, our gun murder rate is 20 times higher than that of other developed countries. Why the difference? It’s far easier for dangerous people to get their hands on guns here in America,” said John Feinblatt, President of Everytown for Gun Safety. “While the gun lobby tries to distract and divide Americans on this issue, we’ve seen a new grassroots community grow to more than three million supporters and achieve gun safety victories in nearly 40 states. The talent, leadership, and cultural reach of the people on this Council will expand this national movement – and inspire even more Americans to lend their voices to the fight to save lives from gun violence.”

Additional Everytown Creative Council members and developments will be announced in the weeks ahead.
