For decades, Pennsylvania has required background checks on all handgun sales, and in 2018, the state enacted a law with strong provisions to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. However, Pennsylvania is still missing several foundational gun laws. Despite ongoing attempts to pass laws that would undermine gun safety, the legislature has begun efforts to pass lifesaving laws like requiring background checks on long gun sales and an Extreme Risk law. Pennsylvania also restricts cities and towns from implementing local ordinances to curb gun violence in their communities.
